10 Essential Car Maintenance Tips Every UK Driver Should Know

Published 27 Sep 2026

Regular, simple maintenance is the single best way to avoid expensive repairs and keep your car safe and reliable. None of the checks below take long, and most can be done in your driveway with no special tools.

1. Check your oil level regularly

Low or old engine oil is one of the most common causes of avoidable engine wear. Check the level with the dipstick when the engine is cold, and follow your manufacturer's recommended service interval for a full oil and filter change.

2. Keep an eye on tyre condition and pressure

Tyres are your only contact with the road. Check tread depth regularly - the UK legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre - and check pressures monthly, including the spare, using the figures in your handbook or on the driver's door sill.

3. Test your brakes

Listen for squealing or grinding, and be alert to any pulling to one side, a spongy pedal, or vibration when braking. Brake pads and discs are a routine wear item, so budget for periodic replacement rather than waiting for a warning light.

4. Look after the battery

Batteries typically last several years, but cold winter mornings often expose a battery that is already on its way out. If starting becomes sluggish, have it tested before it leaves you stranded.

5. Don't ignore the dashboard warning lights

An illuminated engine management light, ABS light or similar should always be checked promptly. Early diagnosis is almost always cheaper than waiting for a small issue to become a bigger one.

6. Keep up with fluid levels

Coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid and screen wash should all be checked periodically, particularly before a long journey or before winter.

7. Replace wiper blades when they streak

Worn wiper blades reduce visibility in exactly the conditions you need them most. They are inexpensive and simple to replace yourself.

8. Stick to the manufacturer's service schedule

A full, documented service history protects both your safety and your car's resale value. It also helps a dealer or independent garage spot developing issues before they cause a breakdown.

9. Keep the car clean, inside and out

Regular washing protects paintwork and the underbody from road salt and grime, particularly over a British winter, and it makes it easier to spot new chips, scratches or corrosion early.

10. Book your MOT with time to spare

Cars over three years old need an annual MOT test. Booking a couple of weeks before it is due gives you time to fix any advisories before they become a failure, rather than being caught out at the last minute.

A little routine attention goes a long way. If you are unsure about any warning sign or noise, it is always worth having it looked at by a qualified technician rather than waiting.
