Car Finance vs Personal Loan: Which Is Right for You?
Published 27 Sep 2026
If you are buying a used car and do not want to pay the full price upfront, the two most common routes are dealer car finance (such as Hire Purchase) and an unsecured personal loan from a bank or building society. Both can work well, but they suit different situations.
How Hire Purchase (HP) works
With HP, you pay an initial deposit followed by fixed monthly payments over an agreed term. The car acts as security for the agreement, meaning ownership passes to you only once the final payment is made. Because the loan is secured against the vehicle, HP rates can be competitive, and the application is arranged directly through the dealer at the point of sale.
How a personal loan works
A personal loan is arranged through your own bank or a loan provider, independently of the car you are buying. You receive the funds and become the outright owner of the car immediately, since the loan is not secured against the vehicle itself. This gives you more flexibility, for example if you wanted to buy privately or negotiate a cash price.
Key differences to weigh up
- Ownership: With HP you do not legally own the car until the final payment; with a personal loan you own it from day one.
- Speed and convenience: HP can usually be arranged quickly at the dealership as part of the buying process.
- Deposit: HP typically requires a deposit; many personal loans do not.
- Early settlement: Both can usually be settled early, though check for any early repayment charges on either option.
- Rate depends on you: The rate offered on either option depends on your individual circumstances, credit history and the lender's own criteria.
Questions worth asking before you commit
- What is the total amount repayable over the full term, not just the monthly figure?
- Is there an option to purchase fee at the end of an HP or PCP agreement?
- What happens if your circumstances change and you need to end the agreement early?
Whichever route suits you best, always read the representative example in full and make sure the monthly payment comfortably fits your budget before signing anything.
