Understanding Car Warranty: What's Covered and What Isn't
Published 27 Sep 2026
A car warranty can offer valuable peace of mind after buying a used car, but the level of cover varies a great deal between providers and packages. Understanding the basics helps you know what you are actually protected against.
What a used car warranty typically covers
Most used car warranties are designed to cover the mechanical and electrical components most likely to fail unexpectedly, such as the engine, gearbox, clutch, steering and suspension components, and key electrical systems, subject to the specific terms of the policy.
What is usually excluded
- Wear and tear items: Things like brake pads, tyres, wiper blades and bulbs are consumable parts, generally expected to be replaced periodically rather than covered as a "fault".
- Pre-existing faults: Any issue present or reasonably identifiable before the warranty started is not usually covered.
- Lack of maintenance: Warranties generally require the car to be serviced in line with the manufacturer's schedule; missed servicing can invalidate a claim.
- Damage from accidents or misuse: Warranty cover is for genuine mechanical or electrical failure, not collision damage or driver error.
Questions worth asking before you rely on a warranty
- Is the cover "comprehensive" or a more limited "named component" policy?
- Is there a claim limit per repair, or per year?
- Do repairs have to be carried out at a specific garage, or can you choose your own approved repairer?
- Is there a call-out fee or excess payable on each claim?
- Can the warranty be extended or upgraded later if needed?
Manufacturer warranty vs dealer warranty
If a used car is still within its original manufacturer warranty period, that cover generally continues to apply regardless of who you bought the car from. Once that period has ended, a dealer or third-party warranty can extend a similar level of protection for an agreed further period.
Why it is worth checking the small print
Two warranties that sound similar on the surface can differ significantly in what they actually pay out for. Reading the terms in full, rather than relying on the headline description, is the best way to know exactly what you are covered for.
