Understanding MOT Tests: A Simple Guide for UK Drivers

Published 27 Sep 2026

The MOT is a yearly check that makes sure your car meets the minimum road safety and environmental standards. Here is what every UK driver should know, especially when buying a used car.

When does a car need an MOT?

In Great Britain, a car needs its first MOT when it is three years old, and then every year after that. You can have the test up to a month (minus a day) before the current certificate runs out and still keep the same renewal date.

What does the MOT check?

The test covers key safety items including lights, brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, seatbelts, windscreen, wipers, mirrors, horn and exhaust emissions. It does not check the general condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox, so a pass does not mean a car is mechanically perfect.

Understanding the results

  • Pass: the car met the legal standard on the day of the test.
  • Advisories and minor defects: items to keep an eye on or fix soon. The car still passes.
  • Major defects: the car fails and must be repaired and retested.
  • Dangerous defects: the car fails and must not be driven until it has been repaired.

Driving without a valid MOT

Driving without a valid MOT can lead to a fine and may affect your insurance. The only exception is driving to a pre-booked MOT test or to a garage for repairs needed to pass.

Check the MOT history before you buy

You can check any car MOT history for free on the GOV.UK website using just the registration number. It shows past passes, fails, advisories and recorded mileage, which helps you spot recurring problems or mileage that does not add up.
